The upsurge in the price for platinum-group elements (PGE), both in US $ and Rand terms, has resulted in a worldwide boom in the PGE exploration and mining industry. In South Africa, impending changes in mineral rights legislation are a contributing factor. New PGE mines have been opened and are being developed in the western, eastern and northern lobes of the Bushveld Complex, on the Merensky, UG2 and Platreef. Mining developments in the Great Dyke are gaining momentum. In addition, several other intrusions in southern Africa including the Molopo Farms, Insizwa, Usushwana and Tete complexes, as well as several intrusions in Namibia are currently being, or have in the recent past been explored for PGE by a number of mining companies.
